Intercultural & Anti-Racism Week is a special event organised by the Equality Commission each year to focus attention on the issues of Racism and Interculturalism. In recent years Northern Ireland has experienced significant economic growth paralleled by rapid social, cultural and demographic changes. Significant numbers of migrant workers and their families have migrated to Northern Ireland to live and work here. While the experience of most has been positive, various forms of racism and discrimination continue to permeate our society and this affects children and young people as much as adults.

Intercultural Week challenges us to face up to these issues and to look beyond stereotypes and myths surrounding migrant workers and their families. Particular problems can occur between children and young people when language barriers prevent communication and learning. Activities associated with Intercultural Week should send out positive messages that welcoming new people and learning about their cultures as well as sharing our own cultural experiences Is a positive and enjoyable learning experience, particularly for our children and young people.

The Commission is keen to support initiatives which introduce children and young people to equality and diversity issues in new and innovative ways. We will be sending posters and other information to schools across Northern Ireland in the run up to Intercultural Week and are very keen to hear about any activities your school or class is planning to celebrate the week. Please use the links sections below for further help and information.
